Alpaca Husbandry Course in Wales

Who is the course for?

If you are thinking of keeping alpacas, new to keeping alpacas or work with alpacas and would like to broaden your knowledge, this course is for you! We encourage couples and colleagues to attend together, as it can be really helpful to have someone to reflect on the day with afterwards  

What will I learn on the course?

We will mix theory with practical experience to provide you with an understanding of: 

  • Alpaca social structures and group dynamics 

  • Selecting and purchasing the right alpacas for you

  • Equipment and land requirements 

  • Handling, catching and restraining your alpacas for husbandry tasks 

  • Feeding your alpacas over different seasons and life stages

  • Body scoring and monitoring your alpacas health 

  • Identifying, treating and preventing common parasites 

  • Regular husbandry tasks & your annual herd health plan

  • The shearing process 

  • The basics of breeding and how it works in alpacas 

  • Diversification possibilities; working with alpacas as an alternative income

Where does the course take place? 

Here at the farm 

How long is the course? 

This is a 1 day course from 10am - 4pm

How many people are on the course? 

A maximum of 4 people (aged 16yrs+) will be on the course 

Do I need to bring anything? 

Yourself and sensible attire, as some portions of the day will be outside

Are snacks and lunch provided? 

Yes, light refreshments for breaks as well as lunch will be provided. If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know when you book

What is the cost? 
£75 per person or £120 per couple

When can I attend the course?

How do I book?

Terms & Conditions

  • For persons aged 16 years+

  • The course will require a minimum of 2 people to run

  • The day will include walking over uneven terrain on the farm, so we do not recommend that this course is suitable for wheelchairs or walking aids

  • The course will go ahead come rain or shine (unless we deem the conditions to be unsafe - in which case we shall reschedule the course), so we recommend that you dress according to the weather and sensible, closed toe footwear is essential 

  • If you are, or could be, pregnant at the time of the course, we recommend that you do not touch pregnant/newly born sheep or alpacas  and ensure that you thoroughly wash your hands after being on the farm with the animals, before (as well as after) using the toilet and before eating food. 

  • Dogs are not permitted 

  • Once booked, the fee is non-refundable 

  • In the event you cannot attend the course date chosen, you may reschedule to a different date (according to availability), when we are provided with a minimum of 14 days notice 

  • In the event of non attendance, you will not be refunded
