Alpaca Husbandry & Glamping Weekend in Wales

Stay on site at the farm for an engaging and informative weekend of learning how to look after alpacas through a mix of theory and hands-on experience! Plus get exclusive access to ask Alice & Kevin anything you've ever wanted to know about alpacas (or glamping!) during a delicious Sunday lunch at The Cider Barn restaurant.

What happens on the Alpaca Husbandry Weekend?

Stay on site at Fostings Alpacas for an interesting weekend of learning how to look after alpacas through a mix of practical hands-on sessions & theoretical teaching with experienced keepers Alice & Kevin.

Friday | 4pm - 9pm | Arrival

Arrive at the farm & check into your chosen glamping pod (choose from Hare's Form Pod or Huacaya's Cush Pod when booking). 

 

​

Saturday | 10am - 4pm | Alpaca Husbandry Course

The day commences with a comprehensive theoretical session, followed by lunch before transitioning into an outdoor, hands-on experience where you can put the theory into practice and concludes with refreshments and an open Q&A session. The main topics covered include:

Alpaca 101 - discussing Terminology, What Are Alpacas & How Many Should I Have?, Breed Comparison, Alpaca Anatomy & Conformation, Are Males Or Females Right For You, Diversification Potential In Alpacas, Cost Of Purchase, Cost Of Keeping Alpacas, Selecting & Purchasing Your Alpacas & An Intro To The British Alpaca Society

 

Requirements - discussing basic requirements for keeping alpacas covering land, shelter, transportation, day to day care & social grouping

Diet, Nutrition & Pasture Management - discussing Diet & Nutrition, Vitamin Supplementation & Pasture Management â€‹

​

Husbandry Tasks - discussing Herd Kit Contents, Halters & Halter Training, Nail Trimming, Shearing, Teeth, Castration, Body Scoring, Summer Care & Record Keeping 

​

Disease & Parasites - discussing Biosecurity Measures, Bovine Tuberculosis, How to Administer Medications & Vaccines, How to Reduce Parasites, Coccidiosis, Worming, Liver Fluke, Clostridial Disease & Mites 

​

Breeding & Cria Care - discussing Basic Breeding Principles & Cycle, Style of Breeding Management, Birthing Kit Contents, Signs of Birthing, What to expect during and post birth Basic Cria Care

Sunday | 8:30am - 12noon | Alpaca Keeper Experience

See what a typical day can look like when looking after alpacas as you carry out the morning rounds with Alice & Kevin, completing jobs such as:
 

  • Feeding the alpacas

  • Husbandry tasks (this may include; vitamin supplementation / weighing / foot trimming / pregnancy testing / health checking & body condition scoring)

  • Checking hay and water

  • Skipping out shelters & paddocks

​
 

Sunday | 12noon - 1pm | Break

Break to freshen up & change before heading out to lunch.

​
 

Sunday | 1pm - 4:30pm (approx) | Sunday Lunch with Alice & Kevin
Enjoy a delicious 3 course Sunday Lunch at 
The Cider Barn at Pembridge with Alice & Kevin and take the opportunity to tap into their knowledge and experience by asking anything you've ever wanted to know about alpacas (or glamping)! 30 minute travel each way to the restaurant with Alice & Kevin is included.

Sunday | 4:30pm - late | Unwind & Rest

Unwind and enjoy leisure time at your pod.

​

Monday | 10am | Checkout

Checkout from Hush Hush Glamping, say goodbye to Fostings Alpacas & head home, full of your new found alpaca knowledge.

There are two package options available:

Alpaca Husbandry Weekend Terms & Conditions
  • For persons aged 18 years+

  • The day will include walking over uneven terrain on the farm and will go ahead come rain or shine, so please dress according to the weather and sensible, closed toe footwear is essential

  • If you are, or could be, pregnant at the time of the course, consult your GP on the risks of toxoplasmosis when visiting an alpaca & sheep farm

  • Dogs are not permitted

  • In the event you cannot attend the dates chosen, you may reschedule to a different date (according to availability), when we are provided with a minimum of 60 days notice

  • All participants agree to the Hush Hush Glamping T&Cs (with the exception of the minimum age requirement, which has been lowered to 16yrs for this event)
